Herbal medicine is a medicine made exclusively from plants, has been used for thousands of years and is still the most widely used system of medicine in the world today. It has been documented, developed and researched over this time and in increasingly being validated by scientific investigation.
Herbal medicines act on the human physiology to influence bodily activity, enhance or inhibit organ function, and are prescribed with the aim of correcting imbalances and resolving patterns of dysfunction. Herbalists generally use whole plant extracts containing multiple constituents. This means each herb has more than one action and may affect more than one area of the body. Using several herbs together means we can make up formulas to suit each individual and each unique set of symptoms, the formula having synergistic activity and enhancing the efficiency of the medicine.
This is the beauty of working with natural products. Herbs enhance the action of body, they nourish, strengthen and support the body to heal itself.Herbal medicines have a very high level of safety and negative side effects are uncommon.
Herbal medicines have many actions including:
immune enhancing and immune modulating effects and can be anti-microbial ie they have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties;
they work beautifully to nurture, strengthen and calm the nervous system for those with anxiety, sleep problems or going through stressful time in their life;
help to balance out hormones including reproductive, thyroid and adrenal hormones,
they can stimulate an under-active digestive system or calm an overactive system
and so much more.
All our herbal medicine is supplied by very reputable companies and are under very strict regulation by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (T.G.A.). We buy organic medicines where available and locally grown if possible otherwise.
With new research, we now have more of an understanding on the potential for herb-drug reactions. Please let our practitioners know if you are currently on any medicines and they will modify your prescription if necessary.
